NEUROMUSCULAR EFFICIENCY

The nervous system's ability to recruit muscle fibres effectively. Higher efficiency = more power per unit of activation. Improves with training and strength work.

Untrained: ~60-70% motor unit recruitment at max effort. Trained: 85-95%. Improvements come from high-force efforts (resistance training, sprints) that teach the nervous system to fire more units simultaneously. Early strength gains are 'neural'. For masters cyclists, declines without sprint work and structured resistance training.
