From a young age John has always had a passion for all things bike related. His obsession with cycling began when he was introduced to the sport by his father (an avid cyclist himself) and he hasn’t looked back since. From those initial road spins at eight years old, John quickly progressed through the juvenile ranks, establishing himself as a formidable competitor and Regional medallist in his early teens.
John briefly stepped away from the sport as he juggled the complexities of work, study and family, but the passion instilled from an early age never burned out. The lure of the bike proved too much and John returned to cycling with Navan Road Club where the competitive spark was reignited and the drive to fulfil his talent and potential was actualised. In his late 20s with work and family commitments in tow, John proceed to rise through the ranks at a meteoric rate, jumping from A4 to A1 rapidly. Realising his youthful potential, as an adult competitor John has received placings and podiums in every category he has raced in.
John’s return to the sport has been facilitated by a rare attribute he possesses; his fantastic ability to balance racing and training with a full time job and family life as a husband and father to three young boys. With his youngest son born six months prior to him competing in the 2014 An Post Rás, John proved his ability to manage any workload by continuing to race at the highest level in Irish cycling. His infectious attitude to training and zealous obsession with the study and practise of training methodologies and physiology has allowed John to remain competitive at the top table despite being confronted with the numerous obstacles faced by amateur athletes. With a fully certified Association British Cycling Level 3 Coach and over 15 years of experience in weight training, John adheres to the principles outlined by the likes of Joe Friel, Andrew Coggan and Hunter Allen, placing particular emphasis on the importance of power training. He appreciates the importance of training hard but equally knowing how to train properly.
Finally, John possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Facilitated by his work as a Secondary School teacher for the past 14 years, everyday professional practise has furnished him with a unique ability to make difficult concepts easy to comprehend. Above all else, John is passionate about the benefits sport brings to the lives of both young and old. Being a level one basketball coach with a track record of success coaching youth teams to both Regional and National stage, John has a full appreciation of exactly what is required in every individual to maximise their potential.
A man who thrives on attention to detail and emphasising the maxim of marginal gains, John lives the philosophy that “preparation is the key to success.” John would be an ideal coach for anyone looking to develop the more technical aspects of their training. With John’s training, not only will you receive quality instruction in how to develop and improve your performance, he will also furnish you with the knowledge and ability to identify and recognise the processes yourself.
